I think the cashier screwed up and didn’t activate the wii gift cards I bought for christmmas presents. Do they have to be activated at the cash register to work?

Most gift cards have to be activated these days… Xbox Live cards, Electronics store gift cards, Target gift cards, etc.
I say it’s better to be safe than sorry, but then again somebody can probably answer the question better than me because I dont know about Wii cards in specific.

No - the cards have a code on them, covered by a basic scratch-it pad (think lottery tickets). You buy them, open the pakcage, scratch off the covering, and enter the code into the Wii shop channel. No activating required.

Yes. When you get the Wii Points the cashier will activate the card. Then all you have to do is take it home and redeem the Wii Points by following the instructions.
If you enter a random code and it hasn’t been activated, it will say “There was a problem redeeming your Wii Points card. Please try again later.”

No. wii points cards do not need to be activated at the store. Once you have the card, you must use the wii to go to the wii shop channel. once there select the button to redeem your wii points card. Once there, you should scratch off a back portion of the card to reveal your sixteen digit code number. Nintendo advices you to to scratch of the back of the card when you are prompted to do so in the wii points card activation process screen. When you enter your code your points will appear.

From the previous answers, it sound like there are 2 types of cards. With some long distance phone cards they have some that need to be activated, and others that don’t, but to avoid people stealing cards in the open, I’d personally say that if you pick it up off a shelf yourself, it needs scanning, but if it’s behind the counter, not so much.
If there’s a number on the back of the package (before opening package, or scratching anything!!), such as a s/n number, try calling nintendo to ask if it’s been activated, or if it needs to be.
